Every year, February 1st is Hourly Comic Day, where one comic is drawn every hour of the day.
On this February 1st, I became grandparent-less. I had gotten a call from my sister Christina in the morning, saying my grandpa died. I didn’t know what to say except “Oh”, and maybe in my head “Of course he did”. He was always a lone wolf and doing his own thing. I wasn’t really surprised since he had been in the hospital for a bit, and it was two months shy of my grandma’s death date. Maybe he saw the news on TV and with his signature “Hah!*grumbles about people*” decided to scoff it right out of this dumpster fire timeline.
For the rest of the day I was shocked and depressed. I couldn’t believe he was just so suddenly gone, somebody with his big, strange personality. Both my grandparents were gone, poof, just one of those adult milestones you never want to reach but everybody does. While I wasn’t able to make it to my grandma’s funeral, I was determined to make up for it by going to my grandpa’s funeral, which would require a very long solo trip to New York (with a contest to win a free TSA detention for every Muslim country you visit! Yay.). And since I was too busy on February 1st being sad and scrambling for plane tickets, with some bestie encouragement, decided to do hourly comic day documenting my trip there as a stress reliever. Here it is:
Never sit next to me on an international flight.RIP grandparents. Hope you’re eating more New York steaks and pancakes.
(I promise the next post will be less of a downer.)
